Liberal PAC End Citizens United (ECU) says that it raised $250,000 to help congressional candidate Jon Ossoff win Tom Price’s House seat.
The announcement comes after the organization announced two weeks ago that it would throw its weight behind the leading Democrat. ECU also boasts a network of 40,000 members in the Atlanta area that they plan to activate, in addition to boosting Ossoff’s bank account.
Ossoff, who has topped two separate polls in Congressional District 6, has the support of Democrat Representatives John Lewis and Hank Johnson and is touted as the left’s best shot at flipping the traditionally red district. In a crowded field of 18, his greatest competition comes from Republican opponents Karen Handel and Bob Gray, who have both trailed Ossoff in the polls.
While Democrats aim to win the District through anti-Trump messaging, polls are consistently showing that the president is popular among voters. A report released by The Trafalgar Group on Monday signaled that Trump has the approval of 51 percent of CD-6, while an earlier zpolitics and Clout Research survey showed the Republican commander-in-chief locking in 58 percent support.
Additionally, the zpolitics report noted that 44 percent of the district’s voters said they want a candidate who will support Trump’s agenda, while 25 percent said they plan to vote for a candidate who votes for his or her own principals. Only 31 percent of voters said they will back someone that opposes Trump’s plans.
The special election takes place on April 18.
