The Pew Research Center has found that Atlanta is among the top ten most populated cities in the United States for illegal immigrants. According to their report, which analyzed numbers from 2014, the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell area is home to 250,000 “unauthorized immigrants.”
The results place the city eighth nationally. Additionally, Pew figured that they make up for 33% of the area’s foreign-born population.
The metro areas with greater illegal immigrant populations include New York City (1.15 million), Los Angeles (1 million), Houston (575,000), Dallas (475,000), Miami (450,000), Chicago (425,000), and Washington D.C. (400,000).
Pew notes that many of the cities will likely be affected by President Trump’s call to withhold funding from “sanctuary cities”- local governments that fail to cooperate with federal immigration laws.
While Atlanta is not technically a sanctuary city, Mayor Kasim Reed has continued to state that Atlanta won’t help Trump in furthering his priority of cutting down on illegal immigration.
“I’m not prepared to make a judgment about us being a sanctuary city, but we are going to be a welcoming city and we’re going to continue all of our outreach efforts to foreign-born individuals,” he said in November.
