Roy Barnes, former Governor of Georgia, testifies on behalf of embattled Senator Don Balfour, known as “Mister” for this trial.  The former governor didn’t offer any direct knowledge of the charges, but offered his opinion of the character of Don Balfour.  Why call him?

This is not Barnes’ first foray into defending a disgraced Georgia legislator.  He’s the lawyer for Rep. Tyrone Brooks, who has his own legal problems.

From the 11 Alive report:

ATLANTA (AP) – A former Democratic governor has taken the stand in the trial of a suspended Republican state lawmaker.

During his testimony Tuesday, Roy Barnes said he’s known Republican state Sen. Don Balfour to be a man of integrity, although the two had political differences.

Balfour is accused of illegally claiming legislative expense pay and double-billing the state and his private employer. Opening statements in the trial began Monday after a jury was selected.

Balfour, of Snellville, has been charged with 16 counts of making a false certificate, one count of theft by taking and one count of false statement and writing.

The trial is being heard in Fulton County Superior Court, and Balfour is expected to testify.

The jury hearing the case could begin deliberations as soon as Wednesday.
